ABOUT US: Case Studies

DC Department of Transportation

Problem

The Washington, DC, government is trying to redevelop Anacostia, an historic neighborhood in Southeast DC. While DC has experienced a lot of economic growth of late, Anacostia has not. Business and people are not moving to the area, which suffers from a negative image.

The District Department of Transportation’s (DDOT) Anacostia Waterfront Initiative Study Group had researched how the area could be revitalized—but it needed to present its findings in a way that would help them get attention and stand out from the multitude of reports their target audience of government and communities see each day.

Approach

Using a combination of media—including illustrations, flash animation, presentation templates, and printed material—LIOBmedia helped the DDOT convey its infrastructural improvement message to the local community and to council member leaders.

To combat the area’s negative image, LIOBmedia used the color red in its work. Red has been proven to stimulate energy and encourage action and confidence.

And unlike many studies that just rely on words to describe a finished result, LIOBmedia used photos of Anacostia and its residents to depict the future of the area.

Outcome

As a result of the study group’s findings which LIOBmedia helped present, Anacostia is benefiting from restructuring and revitalization. One of the more visible results of our work with the DDOT is the rebuilding of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, which will help connect Anacostia to its neighbors.
